SEA SERIES
SEA (Science, Education,
and Awareness) Series brings the marine sciences into elementary and middle
school classrooms. Each unit of the
series is
taught over several visits, and involves experiential learning opportunities,
such
as dissections, water quality testing, contact with live animals, microscope
work, experiments, and field trips. At the end of each unit, the students
are sent home with examples of how they can help protect the ocean environment
they’ve just learned about, translating their awareness into
action.
Curriculum is developed by Aquatic Adventures, in accordance with California
State Education Standards. The program incorporates language arts, math,
and social studies into the activities. Classroom teachers are provided
with a
lending library and additional curricula presented in thematic units, which
are taught
in conjunction with the SEA Series.
SEA Series is offered throughout the year,
to schools across San Diego County. Low-income schools receive SEA Series
programs, at no cost. More than 2500
low-income students participate in the SEA Series each year, at
elementary middle schools including Encanto, Kit Carson, Kimbrough, Memorial, Montgomery and O'Farrell Community School.
